I give you – Boris Tishcheko [Борис Тищенко], born in 1939 and is still teaching composition. He was of course Shostakovich’s student and I had him in the “listen to and appreciate in full later” box until I came across his String Quarters and looked him up for some more information. Not only is he still alive, but he is also writing some very good music – I give you the first movement from his 2006 concerto for violin, piano and strings:
He also wrote 5 “Dante Symphonies” which I haven’t had a chance to listen to very well yet, but after the above piece I might go there, especially since the school is almost out.
Here’s a bit less scary but also good Cello Concerto No. 1 (scored, nonetheless, for a cello, 17 wind instruments, percussion and harmonium)
