Doctor Shot At A Church (Updated)

UPDATE: Andrew Sullivan has a nice collection of link here

George Tiller, a doctor and abortion rights activist was shot at his church in Wichita Kansan  this morning

WICHITA – George Tiller, the Wichita doctor who became a national lightning rod in the debate over abortion, was shot to death this morning as he walked into church services.
Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a member of the congregation. Witnesses and a police source confirmed Tiller was the victim.
No information has been released about whether a suspect is in custody. Police said they are looking for white male who was driving a 1990s powder blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB.

I thought we were done with that sort of things in the 1990s. We should probably thanks hysterical right-wing radio/TV hosts for exciting the crazies and making them think it’s the end of the world or something. I’m sure they’ll do anything for the ratings, right?

Still, shot in a church? Do they have any standards at all? Outrageous!

  1. Here’s a good Bill O’Reilly rant for you:

O’REILLY: If you have a society that’s not the same in 2008 that it was in 2000 — and let’s take the abortion issue. More and more and more, Planned Parenthood and the abortion zealots have made inroads. Now, 12-year-olds can have abortions and then their parents are not told.

Now, a guy in Kansas, George Tiller, OK, can kill a baby — kill a baby — a half-hour before the baby’s supposed to be birthed for no reason whatsoever other than the mother has a pain in her foot. OK? Mother’s health: pain in the foot, migraine headache, whatever it may be. So, anybody looking at this says, “You know, the spectrum has gone too far to the left and I’m gonna readjust my opinion to try to get it under control.”

  2. Isn’t it always some white guy in a powder blue Taurus? When will we learn? Why aren’t the cops pulling over everyone who fits this profile and strip-searching them for handguns? Why isn’t there a national database? I mean, one of these nutbags could be living two blocks over from me right now and I’d have no way of knowing it until he pulled that deathcab out of the neatly-organized garage and sped off at just over the speed limit to commit his ghastly crimes! Buying coffee at MacDonald’s, stocking up on milk, umpiring Little League, gunning down abortion doctors, it’s all the SAME to these monsters!!!

  3. I’d actually met David Gunn ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Gunn_(doctor) ) a couple of months before he was murdered. My friend had worked for the security firm that protected the women from the protesters at the clinic in Montgomery Alabama that Gunn worked at (he worked in Florida and Alabama). The guy had had polio as a child and had to use a cane to walk.

Anyone who likens abortion to the holocaust has some blame in these murders. If you really thought the two were analogous, then it would be rational to kill abortion doctors.

Of course they are in no way analogous. Most fertilized eggs don’t attach to the uterine walls, or are spontaneously aborted very early in pregnancies. If these jerks really thought early term abortion was a human death they’d have funerals every time their wives menstruated.

And to support a complete prohibition of late term abortions is to support sick women being forced to die during birth and to support women being forced to bear children who have medical conditions such as their organs being outside their bodies or lacking a brain, conditions that result in the death of the baby in any case.

I’ll get off my soapbox now.

    • I see all the right-wing pundits are already jumping up and yelling about how this will be used to blame them, a nice defensive move on their part, because most of them are to blame for this – as the details arrive about the guy who killed Tiller, it is clear he was no marginal crazy that everyone wants him to be, he’s clearly disturbed in terms of his ideology, but he had plenty of friends who are probably very proud of him now – this is why inciting hate and calling for violence is a crime, no matter how veiled it is. You’re right, if you compare abortion doctors to Nazi executioners in concentration camps long enough, someone is going to believe it and act on it. What is most perverse in this case is the sense of injustice that drives these people, a sense of injustice that’s been pushed out of the secular public sphere and thus is coming out backwards through extremist violence. Strangely, all of this makes me think that religious folks need to be able to voice their views in public without being treated as insane and superstitious cavemen, otherwise they will talk amongst themselves and incite each other, especially now that Obama is portraited as communist anti-christ…
