I came across this (PDF) interesting essay by Jeff Ferrell (originally published in Theoretical Criminology) and through it I went on to the whole “cultural criminology” topic and found this website. Having been long fascinated with the present cultural fascination with crime and criminality – is it a double fascination then? – I found many interesting essays and discussions on the above-mentioned website. The question still remains, at least for me, why is there a regular “crime report” on my nightly news? What makes it so news-worthy and, for example, my swift trip to the bank and a coffee-shop this morning (located in opposite parts of campus), brilliant in its efficiency and its uncanny ability to provide for an exercise and to satisfy a caffeine addition will never make it to the nightly news, even as a “human interest” story?
