Amazing game!
UPDATE 3: Netherlands score – 1:1
UPDATE 2: (56th minute) RUSSIA SCORES! Pavlyuchenko !!!! His third goal in this competition!
UPDATE 1: First half is over and Russia is looking great although it’s still 0:0 – attacking the goal and dominating the midfield; Dutch can’t really get their game going and missed a couple of easy scoring chances…
I know, I know – there must be nothing exciting going on in the sports in the US of A since ABC is showing Russia-Netherlands game in about 1.5 hours, but that’s great news for me! In any case, join me if you have nothing better to do this great Saturday afternoon:

After an embarrassing loss to Spain (4:1) there was really nothing to write home about, but today’s game against Greece was Russia’s first win in UEFA 2008 – Greece won the previous UEFA Cup in 2004, so this feels pretty good – NOW IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE GAME WITH SWEDEN on June 18th – here’s an account in Russian from Новости.
Continue reading

[Here's a good piece of old-fashioned stereotyping that comes straight from the BBC News]
A Russian man trying to sleep off a night of after-work drinking failed to notice a six-inch (15-cm) knife in his back – until his wife woke him up.
Yuri Lyalin, 53, took a bus home, ate breakfast and apparently slept like a baby before his spouse noticed a handle sticking out of his back.
He was rushed to casualty but doctors found no vital organs damaged.
Mr Lyalin shrugged the episode off but the drinking partner who stabbed him faces trial, Russian media report.
“Unique and intriguing the case may be, but the accused faces a severe punishment,” said Pavel Vorobyov, a deputy prosecutor in the northern city of Vologda. Continue reading

Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times, Neil Buckley, Moscow bureau chief, and Catherine Belton, Moscow correspondent, interviewed Dmitry Medvedev, president-elect of the Russian Federation, in the Kremlin, Moscow, on March 21 2008. Below is an edited transcript
FINANCIAL TIMES: Mr President Elect, what will be your top three priorities when you take office?
DMITRY MEDVEDEV: I think these priorities are completely obvious. The main one is to continue the social and economic course which has emerged and evolved in our country in recent years. The goal of this course is to improve the quality of life for all Russian citizens. We have managed to turn around the economic situation – we have become a much stronger state in this regard. Russia has joined the seven biggest economies in terms of purchasing power, but that’s not all. The main challenge now is to translate these economic successes into social programmes to show that developing the economy improves the lives of every Russian citizen. In recent times we have begun to implement some social programmes in the areas of education and healthcare and I believe that it’s very important to maintain and develop these programmes, getting on with the full-scale modernising of work in healthcare and education, as well as making it possible for the majority of Russian citizens to improve their housing conditions, which is also very important. And finally, Russia has pursued and will be pursuing a well-balanced foreign policy, aiming to defend its own interests in a non-confrontational way, so that Russia’s positions will contribute towards strengthening world security. Thus there are several priorities – to maintain economic stability, to develop economic freedoms, to promote social programmes and to ensure that Russia sustains its position in the world.
FT: The world economy is slowing down. We have a financial crisis in America. There is a risk of the oil price falling. Is the Russian economy heading for a cold shower this year? Continue reading
Russian opera legend Galina Vishnevskaya (Галина Вишневская) plays an old grandmother visiting her grandson serving in Chechnya in Sokurov‘s recent film Alexandra. Jay Weissberg of Variety writes:
“Alexandra” inhabits a world of specificity and universality. The setting is Chechnya, and Alexandra’s questioning of “what is the Fatherland?” is an undeniable critique of that particular conflict, sure to make Vladimir Putin mighty uncomfortable. But Sokurov uses this one seemingly endless conflict to reflect upon the totality of the war experience, not in some superficial and sentimental way but by revealing the loss of basic humanity.
Elderly, no-nonsense Alexandra Nikolaevna (Vishnevskaya) arrives at her grandson’s army base after a long journey. She hasn’t seen Denis (Vasily Shevtsov) in seven years; following the initial joy of meeting he takes her on a tour of the base, where she watches soldiers barely old enough to grow facial hair cleaning their guns. Later on Denis gives her a Kalashnikov to hold. “It’s so easy” she says, surprise and unease in her voice, after she pulls the trigger. Rest of the review.
The review of this film from KinoKultura (New Russian Cinema) describes it as following: Continue reading
I have to say that it is not often that one comes across a composer like Weinberg/Vainberg. I posted once about my growing interest in him that was primarily caused by the fact that Shostakovich considered him to be one of the most talented composers of his time and pulled some strings to bring him to Moscow where Vainberg produced an enormous amount of music. Many of the biographical descriptions of Vainberg’s life lament the fact that there are not too many recordings of his music out there. I suppose that it is true, if one compares the amount of recordings of the music by other Soviet composers. The list of the recordings could be found here, although it does not have all the recent CDs that are showing that the interest in Vainberg’s music is on the rise. Of the latter category, I will mention this great recording of Vainberg’s String Quartets No. 4 and No. 16 by Quatuor Danel (String Quartet). I am only assuming that there are plans for further volumes. But primarily I would like to recommend the recording of Vainberg’s late chamber symphonies. It is a rare CD and even though I was able to buy it at a decent price, the only copies available on amazon.com are now around $45. That is unfortunate, I think, because it might prevent people from discovering this amazing music. Vainberg’s Chamber Symphonies 1, 3, and 4 are composed in the late 1980s and early 1990s (1987, 1991, 1992) and I was very eager to see what kind of music he was writing during that time. Judging by Vainberg’s middle and late symphonies (fully-orchestrated symphonies), I was expecting something more or less dissonant and experimental, but Chamber Symphonies are far from such “modern music” – they are very harmonious and traditional, and reminiscent of Prokofiev’s First Symphony.
Here’s the review by Onno van Rijen who has a great website dedicated to Soviet composers: Continue reading

It’s a pity that no one really celebrates IWD in the U.S. but they do very much in Russia. The irony is that the first International Women’s Day was celebrated in the U.S. on February 28th of 1909 following a declaration of Socialist Party of America. Continue reading
